Today is the 2nd to last post on our BNI business spotlight blog, you’ve read about most of the members – learned SO much about them & the successful businesses they run… and now its time to read about the man behind “The Clappers”! (that’s what they call us in Starbucks… if you came to visit – you’d know why!)

Iaan Hughes is the manager of Starbucks in Madison Park & I met him about three years ago when he agreed to let the Madison Marketeers take over his meeting room every Wednesday. (THANK YOU!)  At first it was pretty casual; a few hellos here and there – but then I found out how cool he was… and now – he couldn’t get rid of us if he tried!    Iaan is such a great guy – a huge supporter of all of his local coffee drinkers, he takes the time to get to know all the people & not to mention he has a rotating art exhibit in the meeting room – (any supporter of the arts is a friend of mine!).   When I told Iaan about this fun BNI blog project he was excited to be a part of it – AAND I got to learn so much about him!  We live in the same neighborhood, he loves country music, works on the RADIO and does a mean Elvis impersonation!

Here is one of my favorite shots of Iaan from our photo-shoot day:

090610_0015Hughes

A little info first please:

Your Name?  Iaan Hughes What do you do & Where?  Manager of the Madison Park Starbucks

How can we reach you?   stop on by: 4000 E. Madison St. Seattle, WA 98112   – call me:  206.329.3736

Now – tell us more!

1)   How long have you been in your business? 6 years with Starbucks and 3 at the Park.

2)   What made you choose to join the Madison Marketeers? Fortunately, they chose me!

3)   What has BNI done for your business? Well, they boost my Wednesday sales, which is great (and thank you). At least once a meeting the BNI group bursts into applause just as someone walks into the store which makes it sound like we’re all clapping for them and even after all these years that still makes me laugh. Sometimes the customer bows or waves their hands like a pageant princess, it’s all quite hilarious and gives a good vibe to the afternoon.

4)   What are your goals? Starbucks has been a great company to work for and I hope to continue with them.

5)   What do you like most about work? We spend so much of our waking life working there has to be something more than a paycheck and for me it’s the people I get to talk to everyday. They’re interesting and smart and funny, for the most part, and there’s a certain joy that comes along with service. Sounds crazy, but it’s true.

6)   What is an average day like for you? Up at 3:45 a.m., out the door by 4:25 a.m. and walking into the store by 4:45 a.m. Then it’s all about brewing coffee, talking about the Mariners, the weather, the newest pothole on lake Washington Blvd., and all the backroom admin stuff that makes all the fun stuff possible.

7)   Is there anything you specialize in with your business? Coffee and People.

8)   What sets you apart from your competitors? My staff and I really care about the service with give and beverages we make.

9)   Describe your dream client: The one that comes in everyday and smiles back at me.

10) Where can people find you or read about you? iaanhughes.wordpress.com (but only if you like dusty old country and rockabilly records)

11)                  Any Hobbies?? I host two weekly radio shows on KBCS 91.3 (and online at www.kbcs.fm) The Outskirts on Thursday afternoons from 12noon to 3pm featuring all sorts of Americana and roots music. Walkin’ the Floor on Sunday mornings from 6am to 9am featuring classic country and rockabilly music like Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline.  (don’t forget to vote for Iaan as the BEST of Western WA HERE)

12)                     What would you like people to know about you… your business and why they should hire you! National Syndication?

WONDERFUL!!  Thank you Iaan for letting us invade your space – we LOVE being here, love the space, LOVE the atmosphere you help create and we are happy to be the applause for your incoming customers!

So, now that you know more about Iaan & his Starbucks, you’ll have to come by – grab a cup of coffee (or toffee nut latte – that’s my favorite!) and join us for an exciting BNI meeting.

(P.S – this Starbucks is SO cool, its pretty much an every day occurrence where you see one or more celebrities… but don’t tell anyone I told you.)

I couldn’t resist – here are a few fun shots from earlier in our shoot:

Bryan Tagas is the author of the Madison Park Blogger – a great site where you can read all the happenings of the best destination within the city; Madison Park!  We first exchanged email a few months back when he happened to catch the spotlight of Catherine Parker (my favorite acupuncturist), THEN I found out he is Margo Spellman’s husband, he goes to Doc Amy VanQuaethem (me too!), and is a client of Leslie Gallaher. (the ten fingers of truth massage therapist!) We have SO much in common – we were destined to meet.  =)  So this morning we met at the Essential bakery on Madison for coffee to chat about work, life and all of our mutual friends and NO WAY will you believe what happened!  About 20 minutes before I got there a dump-truck lost control, sideswiped a car (two I believe) then right into the building on the corner!! Such excitement!  Thankfully no one was hurt – and luckily I had my camera in hand!!

Here are a couple of shots of the accident… (just because it is a crazy one! The news crew was all over the place!)  You can read the full story {HERE}

Today’s featured member is Debbie Sylvester of Defranco Merril Insurance – Debbie & I met about 4 years ago now when the Madison Marketeers started up.  BUT I had heard about her long before that! (all good things of course!)  We were in the original chapter (Seattle’s Best) but missed each other by just a few months (she left in May I joined in July) she also knew Ryan from his Trash Busting days.  Seattle seemed so big… until joining BNI!  I have to say – my day gets brighter whenever I see Debbie.  She is wonderful – always upbeat, full of smiles and great stories from her kids, her dogs and her love of sports.  Oh – not to mention Debbie helps me out with my business insurance and I don’t even worry about falling into the ocean with my new camera because she’s got me covered!!  (THANK YOU DEBBIE!)

Debbie’s daughter Christine just got married last weekend down in San Diego (I can’t wait to see the photos!) but right before she left we had a little coffee date, we talked about life, work and of course BNI!  We snapped a few photos outside our favorite Starbucks – here is on of my fav’s:

BH1_8438

Tell Us:

Who are you?  Debbie Sylvester

What do you do & Where?  Insurance Agent (life/business/home/auto) Defranco – Merril Insurance

How can we reach you?  debbie@defranco-merrill.com,  206.723.1680,  P.O Box 18227, Seattle, WA 98118

Now – tell us more!

1)    How long have you been in your business?  25 + years How about BNI? 9+ years

2)    What made you choose to join the Madison Marketeers? The people (hands down!) have such integrity – I couldn’t not join the group.

3)    What has BNI done for your business? Growth has been huge, not only do I get an amazing amount of business but I am also a better agent because I have so many people to refer my clients to.

5)    What do you like most about work?  Working with people.  I love the relationship aspect.

6)    What is an average day like for you?  I get up early and get all of my office work finished in the morning so I can spend the afternoons meeting with clients. (and occasionally sneaking away for a mariners game!)

7)    Is there anything you specialize in with your business?  Personal and small business insurance.

8)    What sets you apart from your competitors? I really take the time to educate my clients and make sure I am available day & night for them.  Also I am happy to give advice on what to do in situations – I help people make the best choice for them.

9)    Describe your dream client:  Everyone!  Every person out there would be a great referral for me – everyone needs insurance!

10)  Where can people find you or read about you?  Website,  Facebook

11) Any Hobbies??  I LOVE baseball & of course I am a Volleyball Mom!

12)  Why did you get into this business?  Honestly, I started in the dental field and took some time off when I had my kids & did some work as a temp – one of the offices I was temping in requested me back and asked me to stay!

13)  Do you travel for work?  Of course – I take my laptop everywhere!

15)  What would you like people to know about you… your business and why they should hire you!  Well, they know when they meet with me that I will give them honest answers, will take the time to explain coverages and ALWAYS help them when they need it.  For me as I said before it is more about the relationship for long term – getting them the coverages they need to be safe and the education they need to make them feel secure.

So, now that you know more about Debbie & what she does – its time to give her a call!  I know myself and at least two other photographer friends utilize her services, so you should too!  =)  Here is her contact info one more time:

Hooray for Wednesday – because its almost Friday and its also BNI Business Spotlight Day!! Todays featured member of the Madison Marketeers is the amazing, the magnificent, the illustrious Kent Welsh. Kent was one of the very first members I met when joining BNI (5 something years ago). – He is the reason I am in the Madison Marketeers, the reason I am a home owner and hands down Kent is THE most honest & genuine person I know.  He always puts other people first – always.   Let me put it this way – if Kent were to win the lottery today and become a billionaire (fingers crossed!) you would have to say, “He is someone who really deserved it, good for him.” and would be 100% happy for him!  =)  (Kent, you are the best!)

This morning, we had coffee at the Essential Baking Co. for our one to one – we talked about family (his wonderful son Jake – happy birthday!) business (its a GREAT time to buy a house) and of course BNI (we are really going to miss you Leslie!)

Today is Wednesday – one of my faaavorite days!!  BNI!  Today’s featured member is none other than the fabulous – gorgeous – hysterical – full of energy – wonderful Trish Ratcliff!!

I was lucky enough to meet Trish about three years ago when she joined BNI, we had a dance card (coffee date) and right away I knew… she was one of the good ones!  Since then, we’ve gone shopping, met for cocktails, met each others families (who I also love! Hi Dale, Trista, Heather & Jackson!) and of course had more than a couple of makeovers!  Trish keeps me stocked up in moisturizers, foundation, eye/lip/cheek color – you name it, I’ve got it in my makeup bag!

Last week Trish & I met at the Tully’s on Mercer Island (the same place we had our first one to one!) and we snapped a few photos, here is one of my favorites:

15. What would you like people to know about you… your business & why they should hire you? I love taking care of your special skin care and cosmetics needs and finding what product works best for you.  I specialize in doing fundraisers, making gift baskets, whether it is one to one or in a group setting, just girlfriends having fun.

Its BNI business spotlight time!!  Today’s featured member is none other than the wonderful Dr. Catherine Darley – she is a naturopathic doctor specializing in sleep. (we all could use better sleep couldn’t we?)  I met Catherine when she joined our chapter about 7 months ago and have had a really great time getting to know her!  She has an amazing office down on Third Ave (one of my favorite buildings in Seattle!).  Last week Catherine and I sat down for a cup of coffee and spent an hour talking about business, life and best of all crazy travels!  I would love to tell you where (its killing me not to) but I think she is going to use it for her next presentation, so  I’ll keep it secret… for now.

We of course snapped a few photos – here is one of my favs:

BH1_6443bw

Tell us a little bit about you:

Catherine Darley, ND – The Institute of Naturopathic Sleep Medicine

How can we reach you?:

ddarley@naturalsleepmedicine.net  – 206-624-9950

In Catherine’s words:

1)    How long have you been in your business? Since May of 2007 – I joined BNI in December of 2008
2)    What made you choose to join the Madison Marketeers? The group was very professional and I liked that.
3)    What has BNI done for your business? BNI has introduced me to some very sincere business professionals with the entrepreneur mindset, it has helped me come up with new ideas and realize what a great investment networking is!
4)    What are your goals? My goal is to make Seattle have healthier sleep.  There is nothing better than being well rested!
5)    What do you like most about work? My favorite part of work is that “AH HA” moment when it really clicks and they (my patients) can see they too can have good healthy sleep.
6)    What is an average day like for you? In daily life – my family comes first, I really enjoy spending time with them.  Then it is off to the office where I meet with clients, work on writing articles, proposals and work on my public speaking presentations.
7)    Is there anything you specialize in with your business? Sleep, definitely sleep.  I help people re-learn good and healthy sleeping habits.
8)    What sets you apart from your competitors? Well – I’m really the only one!  I take the naturopathic view – very holistic and am always taking classes and continuing my education.

9)  Describe your dream client: It would be someone who has not slept in 20 years, a person who is motivated to take steps day by day to get to that healthy happy place in their life.

10) Do you Travel for work?  I travel often for education – but as far as seeing clients, appointments can often be done over the phone.

11)    Any Hobbies?? Gardening, Environmental Activism, Volunteering
12)     Why did you get into this business? I feel that a crucial part of health that is often overlooked is sleep and needs to be addressed.  Also, I disagree with the macho view of “5 hours is enough for me” attitude, when it really isn’t good for anyone!
13)     What is one interesting fact about you? As part of my daily routine I consciously take a moment each evening to think about my clients and wish them good night.  I believe good thoughts, wishes and prayers are a great way to help in the healing process.

If you sleep better, you’ll feel better – think clearer – you’ll be more creative and overall enjoy life a little more.  So, if you know someone who would like to see the world in a new & brighter way (by being awake!)– have them call Dr. Catherine!   Here is her info one more time:

Hello Wednesday!!  We are more than halfway through our fabulous BNI spotlight project and I am VERY excited today to bring you Catherine Parker of Acupuncture in the Park. I met Catherine about 4 1/2 years ago when she came to visit our BNI group, we could tell immediately (and you will too) that she is an amazing woman.  Beautiful, honest, well spoken, very intelligent – the kind of person we all strive to be!  Over the years I have been lucky enough to photograph her & her family in a few different settings and really get to know her.  One of my favorite things about Catherine is that she really walks the talk!!  When she gives advice, she always researches the answer (so well read) and best yet – she follows her own advice and lives a healthy lifestyle.  Catherine is an inspiring woman and I feel lucky to have her as my acupuncturist and friend.

So last week, Catherine & I met for lunch at Cafe Flora (the greatest veggie restaurant EVER!) and snapped a few photos, here is one of my favorite:

Wednesdays are my FAVORITE days!  Not just because they are BNI spotlight days, not just because they are BNI meeting days – but because they are PILATES DAYS!  I met Nicole just a little over a year ago and it couldn’t have been better timing – she was just starting her pilates business + I LOVE pilates = perfect match!  Not to mention she is ridiculous & fun – we have the BEST time chatting the morning away.  If you didn’t know, chatting makes working out way easier, the hour just flies by!

A couple of weeks ago, Nicole & I met at her studio in Madison Valley (right behind The Essential Baking Company) to snap a couple of portraits for her business portrait, she is just so cute they were all great but this is one of my favorites:

Now – tell us more!

1)    How long have you been in your business? How about BNI? I’ve been teaching for 2 years and in BNI for 1 fabulous year.
2)    What made you choose to join the Madison Marketeers? I joined the Madison Marketeers first of all for the location, but then really loved the members – they are silly & fun yet there is enough seriousness that really makes this group work well.
3)    What has BNI done for your business? BNI has been huge in my success – about 50% of my clients come from BNI (Thank You!), the group has also given me a lot of confidence to try new things and of course it really helps with public speaking.
4)    What do you like most about work? I love learning & applying what I’ve learned to my clients to help improve their workout and overall the quality of their lives.
5)    What is an average day like for you? It is filled with daily rituals like spending time with my family, working out, focusing on growing my business & any chance I get – going to see the Mariners play!
6)    Is there anything you specialize in with your business? I really enjoy rehabilitating athletes – Golfers, baseball players, swimmers – during each workout we customize the routines for each person to help them excel in their sport.
7)    What sets you apart from your competitors? (Besides being way cuter than all the rest?!) Well – each week the body changes and has different issues, I make sure to pay attention and change the workout to fit their needs that day.
8)    Describe your dream client: A fun person who isn’t uptight, loves to work towards getting in shape and wants to get the most out of their workout.
9)    Where can people find you or read about you? Biznik, LinkedIn, Facebook, & coming soon www.kinesiopilates.com
10)    Any Hobbies?? I am a tri-athlete and love to train, listen to music, read & of course travel!
11)     Why did you get into this business? I wanted to help people & I have a true passion & love for fitness and would like to help people live a healthy cohesive life!
12)     Do you travel for work? I would love to teach pilates all over the world!
13)     What is one interesting fact about you? In 1988 I was the Miss White Rock Pageant Queen!
14)     What would you like people to know about you… your business and why they should hire you! When you come to see me, you will see – I am not intimidating – I will be your personal trainer, help you create goals get you on a program (that isn’t too strict) to reach those goals so you will be a healthy, happy, well balanced person!

So – if you know someone looking for a fabulous new workout – have them call Nicole!  Here is her info one more time:
