Today’s featured member is Debbie Sylvester of Defranco Merril Insurance – Debbie & I met about 4 years ago now when the Madison Marketeers started up.  BUT I had heard about her long before that! (all good things of course!)  We were in the original chapter (Seattle’s Best) but missed each other by just a few months (she left in May I joined in July) she also knew Ryan from his Trash Busting days.  Seattle seemed so big… until joining BNI!  I have to say – my day gets brighter whenever I see Debbie.  She is wonderful – always upbeat, full of smiles and great stories from her kids, her dogs and her love of sports.  Oh – not to mention Debbie helps me out with my business insurance and I don’t even worry about falling into the ocean with my new camera because she’s got me covered!!  (THANK YOU DEBBIE!)

Debbie’s daughter Christine just got married last weekend down in San Diego (I can’t wait to see the photos!) but right before she left we had a little coffee date, we talked about life, work and of course BNI!  We snapped a few photos outside our favorite Starbucks – here is on of my fav’s:

Tell Us:

Who are you?  Debbie Sylvester

What do you do & Where?  Insurance Agent (life/business/home/auto) Defranco – Merril Insurance

How can we reach you?  debbie@defranco-merrill.com,  206.723.1680,  P.O Box 18227, Seattle, WA 98118

Now – tell us more!

1)    How long have you been in your business?  25 + years How about BNI? 9+ years

2)    What made you choose to join the Madison Marketeers? The people (hands down!) have such integrity – I couldn’t not join the group.

3)    What has BNI done for your business? Growth has been huge, not only do I get an amazing amount of business but I am also a better agent because I have so many people to refer my clients to.

5)    What do you like most about work?  Working with people.  I love the relationship aspect.

6)    What is an average day like for you?  I get up early and get all of my office work finished in the morning so I can spend the afternoons meeting with clients. (and occasionally sneaking away for a mariners game!)

7)    Is there anything you specialize in with your business?  Personal and small business insurance.

8)    What sets you apart from your competitors? I really take the time to educate my clients and make sure I am available day & night for them.  Also I am happy to give advice on what to do in situations – I help people make the best choice for them.

9)    Describe your dream client:  Everyone!  Every person out there would be a great referral for me – everyone needs insurance!

10)  Where can people find you or read about you?  Website,  Facebook

11) Any Hobbies??  I LOVE baseball & of course I am a Volleyball Mom!

12)  Why did you get into this business?  Honestly, I started in the dental field and took some time off when I had my kids & did some work as a temp – one of the offices I was temping in requested me back and asked me to stay!

13)  Do you travel for work?  Of course – I take my laptop everywhere!

15)  What would you like people to know about you… your business and why they should hire you!  Well, they know when they meet with me that I will give them honest answers, will take the time to explain coverages and ALWAYS help them when they need it.  For me as I said before it is more about the relationship for long term – getting them the coverages they need to be safe and the education they need to make them feel secure.

So, now that you know more about Debbie & what she does – its time to give her a call!  I know myself and at least two other photographer friends utilize her services, so you should too!  =)  Here is her contact info one more time:

Hooray for Wednesday – because its almost Friday and its also BNI Business Spotlight Day!! Todays featured member of the Madison Marketeers is the amazing, the magnificent, the illustrious Kent Welsh. Kent was one of the very first members I met when joining BNI (5 something years ago). – He is the reason I am in the Madison Marketeers, the reason I am a home owner and hands down Kent is THE most honest & genuine person I know.  He always puts other people first – always.   Let me put it this way – if Kent were to win the lottery today and become a billionaire (fingers crossed!) you would have to say, “He is someone who really deserved it, good for him.” and would be 100% happy for him!  =)  (Kent, you are the best!)

This morning, we had coffee at the Essential Baking Co. for our one to one – we talked about family (his wonderful son Jake – happy birthday!) business (its a GREAT time to buy a house) and of course BNI (we are really going to miss you Leslie!)

Today is Wednesday – one of my faaavorite days!!  BNI!  Today’s featured member is none other than the fabulous – gorgeous – hysterical – full of energy – wonderful Trish Ratcliff!!

I was lucky enough to meet Trish about three years ago when she joined BNI, we had a dance card (coffee date) and right away I knew… she was one of the good ones!  Since then, we’ve gone shopping, met for cocktails, met each others families (who I also love! Hi Dale, Trista, Heather & Jackson!) and of course had more than a couple of makeovers!  Trish keeps me stocked up in moisturizers, foundation, eye/lip/cheek color – you name it, I’ve got it in my makeup bag!

Last week Trish & I met at the Tully’s on Mercer Island (the same place we had our first one to one!) and we snapped a few photos, here is one of my favorites:

Sometimes it is meeting people in person or communicating via email or phone. Every day is different I Love that!!

Initially when my daughter was 5 years old and I was a single parent, and wanted the extra income.  I was a consultant and director for several years and then went on to do other things.  About six years ago I decided to be a consultant for the same reason only to build for our retirement years…same goal, different stage of life!
13. Do you travel for work? Not at the moment although I do have business in other states. I offer free shipping of the Mary Kay product to my clients everywhere.
14. What is one interesting fact about you? I belong to a club in Seattle ,the Woman Century Club which is over a hundred years old. It was started by some of the original Suffragette women who fought for the right for women to vote. Women have only had this right since 1920.
15. What would you like people to know about you… your business & why they should hire you? I love taking care of your special skin care and cosmetics needs and finding what product works best for you.  I specialize in doing fundraisers, making gift baskets, whether it is one to one or in a group setting, just girlfriends having fun.

J.K Burwell and I have become instant friends when we first met for coffee (introduced by Ryan – thank you!) – We met as a one to one through BNI to learn more about each others business and it couldn’t have been a more perfect fit!  She has been telling me about her fabulous husband Brian for some time now – and on Friday I finally got to meet him!

Brian Jaeger is the Business Accelerator Manager for Washington Cash - and let me tell you,  Washington Cash is a place that EVERYONE needs to know about!  It is amazing!  You should read more on their WEBSITE, but basically – it is a place for people who need a little help get started in their own successful business!  There are workshops, classes, offices available & other small business owners to brainstorm with.  It was founded in 1995 & since then as helped approximately 1,600 low-income people to graduate from their business training courses, more than 750 businesses have been started or expanded, and 327 loans have been made to low income individuals, totaling $690,250.  Washington CASH is the only microcredit program using the peer lending model in the state of Washington.  Washington CASH helps individuals move from being in poverty to being small business owners and contributors to community revitalization.

A few weeks ago I went and visited one of the groups, we had a great discussion on the importance of professional portraits vs personal photos on your business websites.  There are of course pros and cons to each side – but as always a happy medium.  You want to show your clients who you are – that you are professional, but also when your personality comes through it helps attract the kinds of clients you work best with.  (amen!)

Anywhoo (I’m a rambler today!)  here are a couple shots of each small business owner photographed on picture day!  Enjoy!!

Have a wonderful day!

Its BNI business spotlight time!!  Today’s featured member is none other than the wonderful Dr. Catherine Darley – she is a naturopathic doctor specializing in sleep. (we all could use better sleep couldn’t we?)  I met Catherine when she joined our chapter about 7 months ago and have had a really great time getting to know her!  She has an amazing office down on Third Ave (one of my favorite buildings in Seattle!).  Last week Catherine and I sat down for a cup of coffee and spent an hour talking about business, life and best of all crazy travels!  I would love to tell you where (its killing me not to) but I think she is going to use it for her next presentation, so  I’ll keep it secret… for now.

We of course snapped a few photos – here is one of my favs:

Tell us a little bit about you:

Catherine Darley, ND – The Institute of Naturopathic Sleep Medicine

How can we reach you?:

ddarley@naturalsleepmedicine.net  – 206-624-9950

In Catherine’s words:

1)    How long have you been in your business? Since May of 2007 – I joined BNI in December of 2008
2)    What made you choose to join the Madison Marketeers? The group was very professional and I liked that.
3)    What has BNI done for your business? BNI has introduced me to some very sincere business professionals with the entrepreneur mindset, it has helped me come up with new ideas and realize what a great investment networking is!
4)    What are your goals? My goal is to make Seattle have healthier sleep.  There is nothing better than being well rested!
5)    What do you like most about work? My favorite part of work is that “AH HA” moment when it really clicks and they (my patients) can see they too can have good healthy sleep.
6)    What is an average day like for you? In daily life – my family comes first, I really enjoy spending time with them.  Then it is off to the office where I meet with clients, work on writing articles, proposals and work on my public speaking presentations.
7)    Is there anything you specialize in with your business? Sleep, definitely sleep.  I help people re-learn good and healthy sleeping habits.
8)    What sets you apart from your competitors? Well – I’m really the only one!  I take the naturopathic view – very holistic and am always taking classes and continuing my education.

9)  Describe your dream client: It would be someone who has not slept in 20 years, a person who is motivated to take steps day by day to get to that healthy happy place in their life.

10) Do you Travel for work?  I travel often for education – but as far as seeing clients, appointments can often be done over the phone.

11)    Any Hobbies?? Gardening, Environmental Activism, Volunteering
12)     Why did you get into this business? I feel that a crucial part of health that is often overlooked is sleep and needs to be addressed.  Also, I disagree with the macho view of “5 hours is enough for me” attitude, when it really isn’t good for anyone!
13)     What is one interesting fact about you? As part of my daily routine I consciously take a moment each evening to think about my clients and wish them good night.  I believe good thoughts, wishes and prayers are a great way to help in the healing process.

If you sleep better, you’ll feel better – think clearer – you’ll be more creative and overall enjoy life a little more.  So, if you know someone who would like to see the world in a new & brighter way (by being awake!)– have them call Dr. Catherine!   Here is her info one more time:

Two weeks ago Jen and I met for breakfast at our favorite neighborhood restaurant (that’s right, we’re neighbors!) the Blue Star – we laughed and talked the morning away and were both a little sad to have to go back to work.  We probably could have stayed and chatted all day!!  Here is one of the images we snapped, so you can see who Jen is:

Happy BNI Business Spotlight Day!!!

Today’s featured member is none other than our fearless leader – the President himself, Mr. Travis Banducci!  Travis is not only the man who runs our BNI meetings each week but also the owner of Detail Oriented -  everyone’s FAVORITE auto & marine detailing company.  I met Travis about two years ago and right away you could tell what kind of person he is – honest, kind & incredibly sweet!

We had SO much fun at Cafe Ladro during our one to one (where we were probably way too loud snapping some HILARIOUS photos) mostly chatting about the BNI chapter, our businesses & Travis’s family, Jazmine (his beautiful wife) and his three incredibly smart kids (all under the age of 10 and better at computers than both of us) and of course Liam (his brother-in-law and one of the reasons his business is so successful!).   Here is one of the photos we took that day:

2009_06_01_BNI0027

So, first tell us – Who are you?  What do you do? and How can we reach you?

Travis Banducci
Detail Oriented
Auto and marine detailing.
We offer a full service auto salon from an enthusiast level to high paint correction.
Call us: 888-697-1813
Email us:  thedetailors@gmail.com

In Travis’s words:

1)    How long have you been in your business? We started detailing cars in the year 2000.

2)    How about BNI? I have been a member with the Madison Marketeers for coming up on 2 years.

3)    What made you choose to join the Madison Marketeers? (over other groups) The Madison Marketeers have a certain energy within the chapter that is unparralled with any other group I visited.  A welcoming, uninhibited, fun experience every time.

4)    What has BNI done for your business? BNI has expanded my skills in public speaking, networking, and people skills.  As far as our business goes we have grown consistently with a great referral network since day 1.  People in the chapter look out for you and qualify referrals well.  It’s been a very positive experience for our company.

5)    What are your goals? (this year, 5 year, life?) We hope to have a few divisions.  A consumer grade company, offering quality detailing, affordable to the general public.  Like a Jiffy Lube if you will.  Then a high end shop offering paint correction, wet sanding, and minor body repair for the discerning client or people who collect and show cars.  There would only be one of these and I would work there for sure.  After this a boat division that expands into fuel polishing, bimini fitting and repair, eisenglass sales and installation, bilge services…not just detailing.  A full spectrum of boat needs all in one company.

6)    What do you like most about work? I have a passion for detailing on a high end level and love the result of a high quality finished product.  I love learning new techniques and figuring out how to fix mistakes.  Most of all I love the clients and meeting new people.  Creating good relationships is very important to me and I try my best to get to know my clients on a personal level even if I never see them again.

7)    What is an average day like for you? I keep busy.  An average day will consist of being on the phone a lot.  I typically handle all the calls and client questions.  Liam, our head detailer, is usually on the road or on job sites making it happen.  He’s a pro.  I enjoy time with my family quite a bit and try to work from home as much as possible.  We homeschool so I spend time with my kids.  I run errands to fix the cars, or paint a room, get groceries.  I kiss my beautiful wife.  I do quite a bit of detailing as well but I have a few “needy” clients I spend most of my time “working” with.

8)    Is there anything you specialize in with your business? Paint Correction.  We have mastered a system for de-blemeshing auto paint which can take hours and hours.  It’s the crem-de-la-creme of detailing and can be very expensive.  The result is worth every penny.  It requires extensive time and patience.

9)    What sets you apart from your competitors? What sets us apart is probably the high touch.  The way we try to develop relationships and build a friendship first, and do business second.  This has always proved to work well for us and we will continue to do it.  We also offer guarantees and warranty all our work.  Why?  Because I want to be treated by businesses I use the way I treat people who use our business.

9)    Describe your dream client. A dream client for us is a collector who needs our services week in and week out.  A client who will fly us to a car show in Australia to wash and manage their automobile on site.  A client who gives us complete authority over the proper methods for the car and enjoys our presence and understands our efforts.

10)    Where can people find you or read about you? (this is your chance to brag awards, accomplishments here) You can probably find us online looking for reviews.  We were once in boating world magazine, featured under the companies in Seattle who detail.  Nothing spectacular…for now.   Our awards and accomplishments are primarily documented by the owners of cars and boats.

11)    Any Hobbies?? Sure!  I’m interested in upholstery and custom boat interiors.  I’d love to get into this…it’s a time issue now, but I’ll get there.  Currently I play the drums and a plethora of other instruments.  We are an active family with hiking, camping and outdoors crazyness.  Have to keep those kids running or else…

12)     Why did you get into this business? My business started as a hobby level, enthusiast, keeping my car nice deal.  Progressively I became more interested and got better at it.  Then I had to charge based on friends and family wanting me to do it for them.  I started with 1 bucket, a crate, 2 wash mitts, and maybe 3-4 products.  That was the good old days…

13)     Do you travel for work? I do travel for work…No where exotic yet but I’ve detailed in Texas, Washington and Oregon.

14)     What is one interesting fact about you? An interesting fact…hmmmm.  I can grow an afro…A good one too.

15)     What would you like people to know about you… your business and why they should hire you! People should hire us based on our integrity.  We do a good job, and so do lots of other detailing companies.  What we can offer is a high touch approach that most people won’t.  Having a personal relationship with clients can be touchy sometimes and people find it easier to keep it all business.  I’ve found more fulfillment getting to know families and clients and letting them get to know my family as well.  This guarantees clients for life and we still have our very first client…Dale and Carol Duskin from Arlington Washington.  They are the owners of the Arlington Pharmacy and we work with him every single week, year round…Matter fact, he’s a dream client and a best friend!
